Today’s Scripture: Colossians 3:1-4
Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. 2 Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. 3 For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory.
Today’s Devotional
There is a phrase in verse 3 that is the crux of everything Paul is saying to the Colossians and to us. “Your real life is hidden with Christ in God.”
Our real life – our true self – is not what we do all day long. It’s not the career we have or the people we meet or the awards we win. It’s not the stuff we buy and accumulate nor is it the to-do-list that seems to always occupy our minds. We like to THINK this is our real life. We like to BELIEVE this is our true selves. But it’s not. In fact, this life is as good as dead. Paul says it IS dead.
Our real life is hidden with Christ in God. Think about that. You are WITH Christ – united to Christ – him living in you and you in him. And Christ is hidden IN God. There is union between us and God because of Christ. This is our true lives. This is our true self.
Another way to look at it is through the lens of the Trinity. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are all in a divine dance with each other – enjoying each other – a part of each other. And we are invited into the dance! We may think we are on the outside just watching. But the truth is – we are dancing!
Everything changes when we begin to understand this. It’s Paul’s whole point. When we get that we are hidden in God with Christ then we will no longer live life out of our false self. We’ll look more at that false self tomorrow. But for today believe the Good News that we are hidden with Christ in God. Thanks be to God!
Today’s Prayer
God help us to fully understand and believe the amazing truth that we are hidden with Christ in you.
Amen
