Today’s Scripture: John 15:9-17
9 “I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. 10 When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. 11 I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! 12 This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. 13 There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me. 16 You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name. 17 This is my command: Love each other.
Today’s Devotional
We are about to be invaded once again. The last time the cicadas arrived we were living just outside of Baltimore. In the middle of the “invasion” I had to fly somewhere. As we taxied to take-off, there were about 10 cicadas on the wing of the plane, just outside my window.
As we made our way to the runway most of them fell off. One didn’t. He held on for dear life. To be honest I wondered if the plane should not have been de-cicadaed the way it would have been de-iced! But they crew kept going so I figured it was ok.
We started our take-off roll almost the second we turned onto the runway. Suddenly there was a massive amount of wind trying to deplane the cicada. But he held tight. We got faster and faster, but the little guy just held on longer and longer.
Now I was cheering for him. Come on little guy! Hang on!
He lasted to the point that we lifted. We were just seconds into the air when it was finally too much.
I think about that guy as we get ready to experience another round of cicadas. But also when I read this passage in John about remaining.
I wonder what life would look like if we all took the command to remain in Jesus’ love as seriously as that cicada took to clinging to that wing.
Today, see what a difference it makes to remain in love. And hold on tight.
Today’s Prayer
God there are so many things that try and pull us out of your love. Help us to remain. Help us to hold on tight no matter how strong the winds might get.
Amen
