Today’s Scripture: I Samuel 17:48-52a
48 As Goliath moved closer to attack, David quickly ran out to meet him. 49 Reaching into his shepherd’s bag and taking out a stone, he hurled it with his sling and hit the Philistine in the forehead. The stone sank in, and Goliath stumbled and fell face down on the ground.
50 So David triumphed over the Philistine with only a sling and a stone, for he had no sword. 51 Then David ran over and pulled Goliath’s sword from its sheath. David used it to kill him and cut off his head.
When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they turned and ran. 52 Then the men of Israel and Judah gave a great shout of triumph and rushed after the Philistines, chasing them as far as Gath and the gates of Ekron.
Today’s Devotional
I am an over-packer. I mean a serious over-packer. When I go on a trip for a few days you’d think I was going to be gone for a week or more. I just do not feel comfortable unless I know that I’m not going to run out of anything – especially socks and underwear! I also need to know that I’m prepared for any type of weather or social situation I might encounter. The worst thing would be packing only shorts and t-shirts and needing something that was business causal!
Unfortunately, this over-packing need manifests itself in other areas of my life. There are many times when I think that I just do not have the right things to do the job I’m being called to do. I feel unprepared – which can lead to being paralyzed and not acting at all.
The story of David and Goliath speaks to my need to be over-prepared and over-supplied.
The text says “David triumphed over the Philistine with only a sling and a stone, for he had no sword.” In other words, David was not an over-packer.
In fact, people tried to get him to take a sword and some armor – but he decided to go all in with what God had provided him.
What is it that you are dealing with this day? What has God called you to do? What task do you need to accomplish or goal you need to meet? Our tendency is to look for the things we lack and try and stock up on them. But the truth is – God has already given us everything we need. We just need to trust the slingshot – and not over pack!
Today’s Prayer
God thank you that you have given us everything we need to do your will. Thank you that we have everything we need to get through the day and accomplish what we need to accomplish. Help us to trust in what we have and trust in you for everything we need.
